We all live in a world where we are exposed to viruses all day long.

There are viruses and harmful bacteria everywhere and we are always exposed to it.

Some get sick and some do not.  What causes that?  What causes the neighbor next door to catch the flu or pneumonia when you have probably been exposed to the same virus and you don’t get sick?

It’s your immune system.

What is your Immune System?

A simple explanation is your immune system is the collection of bodily processes which protect you against disease, a method of self-preservation.

Basically, it recognizes foreign, infected, or diseased cells to which it generates a response to eliminate them, and stores that response in the memory bank to more efficiently deal with subsequent encounters.

It uses lots of helper cells throughout your body to fight disease on contact.  The fewer helper cells, the less chance you have of fighting it.  The more helper cells you have, the better chance of staying well.  And that’s a big part of what makes the difference between an immune system of someone who often gets sick and the immune system of someone who doesn’t.

All kinds of things can impact your immune system.  It’s not a question of how much you are exposed to disease.  Because the more you are exposed to it, the more efficient your body because at dealing with disease.  It’s about how you take care of yourself and build up that immune system.  Eating right, getting adequate rest, your diet, antioxidants, and getting enough exercise all play a role in the immune system.

But, did you know that your mind plays a major role in your immune system?

Psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) studies the relationship between your immune system and your mental processes.

Evidence has shown there is, communication between your mind and body.

Let’s talk about The Placebo effect:

The word placebo originated from the Latin "I shall please." A placebo is a fake medical intervention.

Example: A patient is given a pill (not knowing it’s just a sugar pill), and told that it may improve his/her condition. Because the patient has a belief in their condition improvement, many times it does.

Research studies have also found that patient recovery can be increased by words that suggest the patient “would be better in a few days”.

Let’s talk about The Nocebo Effect:

The word nocebo originated from the Latin.  “I shall harm.”

A patient who disbelieves in a treatment may experience a worsening of symptoms.

An example of nocebo effect would be someone who dies of fright after being bitten by a non-venomous snake.

In one experiment, college students were told that an electric current would be passed through their heads and that this might cause a headache.  Although not a single volt of electricity was actually transmitted, more than two-thirds of the students reported headaches.

Perhaps the most bizarre of all the experiments was that conducted with a group of asthmatic patients.  They inhaled a vapor that they believed to be a chemical irritant or allergen.  Nearly half of the patients experienced breathing problems with several developing full-blown attacks.  They were then "treated" with a substance they believed to be a bronchial medicine and recovered immediately.  In fact, both the irritant and the medicine were the same substance: a nebulized salt water solution.  Both the attack and the cure resulted from the patients expectations.

Another example of a Nocebo effect is When you are watching the news and seeing that there is a pandemic of Swine Flu happening, and they begin listing the symptoms of it,  the first thing that happens is that you feel fear.  Uh oh, what if I get Swine Flu?

First of all, Fear has an effect on the immune system and your immune system is what is going to fight off the Flu.

Secondly, the emotion Fear has the ability to alter your state of mind, which is hypnosis.  When you experience fear, you tend to put yourself into a trance … then the news starts listing the symptoms of the Flu … Now you are in an altered state of consciousness, the listing of the symptoms can have the effect of being direct commands given to your subconscious mind and you can almost immediately begin to experience the effects of the symptoms.

So, you can see how easily you can make yourself sick with by expecting to get sick.  Many people have vocabulary which makes them sick, “such as I am so sick and tired of …”  “I almost died when I heard that”  “I nearly had a heart attack” These and about a 1000 other germ thoughts go directly to your subconscious mind and they are like assaults to the body.

Conversely, however … you can also easily program your mind to keep you well and healthy.  By re-considering your choice of words and rather than saying, “I catch the flu every year” you might say “I just know this year I will stay well.”

Our minds have a tendency to cling to the negative words people use in our environment.

As a matter of fact, people compete for being the worse off, for example: “I am so sick.  I feel horrible.”

“You think you’re sick?  I am even sicker than that!”

It’s silly when you think about it, but people get charged up by having the worst victim story.  It gives them bragging rights.

So, what if you were to start bragging about the fact that you are the type of person who always stays well?

Now that’s something to brag about!

Hypnosis will help in several ways:

1)  In and of itself, going into hypnosis is very relaxing. It shuts off the Stress Response (stress makes you vulnerable to getting sick) and increases the Relaxation Response.  You can’t be stressed and relaxed at the same time.

2)  The positive suggestions given during hypnosis re-program your subconscious mind to help you learn to speak to your body in ways that are geared toward keeping you healthy.  Again, words have an impact on the body.  So, positively talking to your body in hypnosis can be very preventative medicine.

3)  The process of visualization is another way we talk to the body.  During hypnosis, we visualize our bodies healthy and doing the activities we would like to be doing as a healthy person.  Miraculous healings have taken place in cancer patients by visualizing an influx of good cells chasing away the bad cells.

So, what do you say?  Let’s all work together and Beat Swine Flu! You can put your powerful mind to work for you to build up a strong immune system with my two session Hypnosis program designed to help you to Stay Well.
